Creative Rituals & Your Workspace

Hello fellow Badasses!

I’m a witchy woman at heart so I like rituals and I have a few creative rituals I wanted to share with you.

These rituals are like a routine that help your brain actually become better adapted to focus.
If you’re wound up about a project and feeling anxious, having a ritual can help calm you down. Before we get into the bones of the ritual let’s take a quick look at what your workspace is like.

My office is my sanctuary. Whether it’s writing, painting, sculpting, the space where you create should be a place that helps you, that encourages you.

Some people prefer a clean, tidy minimal working area. I am not one of these people. My desk is festooned with figures, candles, knick knacks, postcards – I like to have a truly personalised space to work in.

dsc_7150-01.jpegThe things around me confirm my personality and provide inspiration just by reinforcing my identity. I like to think of it as organised chaos.
It may look like a mess to you but I don’t care. It’s my little dark corner of the house and I love it. My husband actually built this desk for me when I started my magazine 4 years ago.

Sam Gosling, a psychologist at the University of Texas at Austin and author of Snoop: What Your Stuff Says About You says “Taste reveals a lot about what someone values and needs to fill their life with meaning.”

Things to consider when making your creative space work for you!

  • Lighting – Make sure you can get some natural light where you’re working.
  • Make it inviting
  • Quotes and other inspirational shiz
  • For the love of god get a good chair!

Once you’ve got your workspace right you’re halfway there. A lot of creatives wait for inspiration to strike before getting to work but for me I can’t just sit around and wait. I need to grab hold of any spark I get and then fan the flames to make it burn into a bright idea.

So, let’s say I want to write an article or a review or more of my novel, I start my ritual.

  • Large mug of coffee or tea
  • I light a candle
  • I select some music (I’ve got to have music when I write!)
  • Think of a quote that inspires you. Print that shit out and stick it somewhere on or near your workspace.
  • Start!

Now get creating you Badass!
